Tips on Managing Screen-Time

Technology is currently becoming a huge tool for our kids to learn and interact with friends. We are facing a new normal and can manage screen-time as a family with these tips

Be Realistic

Come to terms with the fact that your kids may be spending more time in front of their screens. Some schools are utilizing technology to make learning accessible for their students.

Revisit Screen-Time Rules

Kids are doing school work online and socializing via screen is practicing safe social distancing. Have a conversation with your family about ways you will all be using screens moving forward. Use this to establish new rules. TheSmartTalk is a great tool for this. It’s free and helps families create agreements about technology use.

Understand Socialization is Important

Kids are craving socialization while being told to practice social distancing. This lack of socialization can be hard for adults too. Our kids are missing their regular social interactions. Technology is allowing them to stay connected in these ways:

  • Facetiming with friends or family
  • Talking through group texts
  • Sharing funny and positive content with each other
  • Playing games together
  • Setting up a Google Hangout or Zoom meeting to stay in touch with friends, family, and classmates
  • There are even these activities to do for our little ones

Model Appropriate Screen-time Use

It’s still important to check in on what your kids are doing on their devices. Encourage them to use devices in common spaces, or keep the door open.

  • Block out time to work
  • Commit to family meals being a screen-free zone
  • Take breaks from your screens

Be kind to yourself, leave the guilt behind and work with your kids when it comes to screen time. We are all in this together!
